Christine Altman
The journey has been a constant theme in Christine Altman's life. Her father's career as a printer brought the family incrementally eastward, with stops in Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida and Virginia. As an adult the wanderlust continued as she searched for the right fit in Cincinnati, Chicago, Santa Fe, Washington DC and finally Philadelphia. It comes as no surprise that sense of place plays heavily into her work.
With every turn there are threads of familiarity in Philly, with cultures, scents, flavors, and voices reminiscent of the South Chicago neighborhood where she grew up. These memories also create a presence, interacting with and juxtaposing disparate meanings to the found objects that are the basis of her process.
